“我胸口里还有那种渗漏的感觉，一种温暖而又珍贵的东西流了出来……很长时间我只能专注于让自己不要垮掉。”这样的句子，加之他所描述的屠宰场，血雾，腥臭，读来直叫人触目惊心。但这还不是情感最强烈的端口。他在达到美加边境后，在船上抉择自己是否要跳船游到加拿大逃避兵役，平静的湖面，舒缓的风，安静的对岸树丛，对比着他胸中翻江倒海的情绪，家乡的小镇、亲朋、同学，大体育场里赛场上的灯光，热狗与爆米花的香气，人声，战争电影，枪崩掉的手指头，眼睛被打成星状黑洞死在地上的越南民兵。
